Turkey gets its first TC2 loom at Cukurova Univ.!
by

Professor Dr. Havva Halaceli Metlioglu and I met in Izmir in 2005,  when the university where she studied, hosted an ETN conference. Havva participated in the TC-workshop I taught, and we have kept in touch since then!

Two years ago she came to Norway for a TC2 workshop, and ‘got hooked’ on getting a TC2 for her university in Adana: This winter she succeeded, and this loom is the very first TC2 in Turkey! Congratulations! While I was in Adana, I was treated like a queen;  delicious meals, tours around the area, time with her colleagues, students, family and friends! I even brought home a bag of delicious oranges from Havva’s garden!

Below is Havva’s ‘crew’:  Her assistant, Hale Yilmaz,  and students Sansim  Boga and Hacer Durmaz. They also taught me how to make Turkish Coffee in the correct way! Great!

We started out putting the loom together – with good help from her assistant, students and family. Making the warp was done on their BIG warping frame!

In the same room, they had a number of small 24-shaft dobby looms of Turkish make: They looked smart with the button operation!

A couple of days we had an outside temperature of around 20 degrees. Of course we had to make sunny selfies on the way to and from lunch!

To the left: Sansim, center Havva and Hacer to the right:

The view from various classrooms and offices in the Faculty building: Notice the snow-capped mountain range in the middle photo!

Not enough time for everybody to weave finished pieces, but to the left  is a little section of Hale’s 2-shuttle weave. She wove face down, so the colors appear inverted.  A little hard to figure out, but the result was very well done! And Havva wove a youth portrait of her mother, using no particular structures. Very successful!

All participants got an official diploma at the end of the workshop.

The rest of my pictures are from around the campus, from the old town in Adana, from great meals and tea breaks in the sunshine!

Oh, and Havva sent me a photo of a newspaper page:  Apparently the first TC2 in Turkey made headlines!

Why all sightseeing took place after dark? Make a guess what kept us busy all day! Oh, by they way: Cukurova University are interested in guest lecturers for the TC2 loom 🙂
